First, when using folders on the IMAP server, it is a good idea to limit the number of
messages in your INBOX and other folders, to keep folder size down. Keeping folder size down can help
decrease the amount of time it takes to access your folders on the server.
What is SMTP? SMTP stands for Send Mail Transfer Protocol. It handles the delivery
of an email message from one computer to another. This is called relaying. The nicadd SMTP
server will only relay messages from people who are at NICADD at NIU. If you need to use the SMTP
server from anywhere outside of NICADD, please contact me to make arrangements.
Caveat Empor: there is currently no backup system on the nicadd server, but
by all means please use it!

Launch Outlook Express. Usually this can be done by clicking the Outlook Express
icon located near the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
If the icon is not there, look through the start menu programs.
On the top menu bar, click Tools and then Accounts. A new window should pop up.
In the new window, click Add then click Mail. You will now go through a series
of windows.
The new window should say 'Add your Display Name:'. Type in the name that you
want to appear in your outgoing messages. Click Next.
Click the selection button before where it says 'I already have an email...'. Put in
your email address. Your email address is your_login_id@nicadd.niu.edu. For example if you were
given a login id of smith, then your email address of smith@nicadd.niu.edu. Click
Next
Where it says 'My incoming mail server is a POP3 server', change POP3 to IMAP.
Under where it says 'Incoming mail server' add nicadd.niu.edu. Under where it says '
Outgoing mail server' add nicadd.niu.edu. Click Next.
Where it says 'Account:' add your_login_id. Where it says 'Password:' add
your email password. Click Next.
On the top menu bar click Edit then Preferences. A new window should pop up.
On the left hand side of the window, where it says 'Mail & Newsgroups', expand the list
by clicking on the arrow.
Highlight 'Identity' by clicking it once. The top right hand side of the window should
now say 'Identity'.
Under 'Your name: add your name. This is the name that will appear in your outgoing
messages
Under 'Email address: add your email address. Your email address is
your_login_id@nicadd.niu.edu. For example if you were given a login id
of smith, then your email address is smith@nicadd.niu.edu.
Again in the left hand side of the window, highlight 'Mail Servers' by clicking on it
once.
Where it says 'Incoming Mail Server' locate the button that say 'Add...' and click
it. A new window should pop up.
Under the General tab, where it says 'Server Name' add nicadd.niu.edu and
change 'Server Type to IMAP. Where it says 'User Name' add your_login_id. Click 'Ok.
Back in the right hand side of the original window, under where it says 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)
server add nicadd.niu.edu
Under where it says 'Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages' check If
possible
Click the Ok button
You are now setup to use Netscape Messenger 4.76 to access your email. To use Netscape Messenger,
launch Netscape Navigator, then on the top menu bar click Communicator then Messenger.
